Tires – SIGH

Had to buy new tires this week for my car. I drive a small car, so i figured the tires would be like 30 or 40 each.

WRONG! Over 100 each was all we could find, and we searched everywhere. Even then, no one has them in stock, and they must be ordered which takes at least 3 days just to get them in!!!

The tire size, in case you were wondering is 195/50 R 16 V . They are low profile high preformance tires, and that is all they make for that size. We had no clue!

A word to the wise, know what type of tire the car takes when you buy, so you arent shocked later.

Our house is slowly but surely coming along now. We are very excited. Every weekend we drive out to see the progression. Unfortunately this past weekend not much had changed from the previous weekend. There still isn’t a frame up. However, they have plenty of time, and we figure that they are pushing ahead on some other homes right now rather than ours.

We’ve been in frequent contact with the DFW Design Center. They have been a bit of a pain. It’s just adding a middleman to the mix and they are never well informed.
They called to tell us that the carpet we selected was being discontinued and that we had to choose another carpet. We went out to look at other options and the 4 others that there were initially were gone also. There was not a color or quality that was the same to what we chose. We left in frustration and made a few phone calls to the builder, our sales guy, and the design center. We were then told they did have enough carpet. Then we were called and told that the carpet would be coming from 3 different dye lots.

THEN after many more trips to look at different carpet samples and many more phone calls we were informed that they did in fact have enough carpet for our house.

From our various phone calls we found out that the design center just was not doing their job. If they’d gotten all the information about what was going on before contacting us, we could have saved about 8 hours of our time.

Hopefully there will be no more situations like this. We’ve already experienced a similar situation with our cabinetry ‘going through a reselect process and getting mixed information from the design center and builder’.

I’m still pleased with Highland homes due to the fact that they are usually the ones that fix the problem and are always trying to accommodate us. Just beware of middleman.

New House

We bought a new house! It\’s a Highland Home. We\’re having it built from the ground up and are very excited about finally getting out of apartment living. We\’ve had enough of poor maintance, outrageous rent, and the smell of smoke coming up from our downstairs neighbors. So far our experience with Highland has been ok. The initial sales rep we spoke with didn\’t have a clue. She told us that features were included which actually weren\’t. They have however, thrown those items in for us at no charge. So right now there is a clean slate and we\’re starting to roll on the project. We\’ve finished our consultation at the design center and plan on meeting with the builder later this week *hopefully*. Click here for pictures of our very own pile of dirt.

Our honeymoon at Sandals

Ok first, if you disagree with me, fine, dont flame me for having an opinion.

We, me and my new wife, arrived at Sandals Antigua on April 13th, 2003, and departed on April 20th, 2003. We stayed in a Grande Luxe Beachfront Concierge Room, room 123.

Sandals claims to be a five star resort, as you can see from one of the pages where I

Highlighted their marketing. I will merely list the reasons why they are not.

1. Our room was supposed to include a sitting area, mahogany bed, and a daily newspaper. There were none of these. Our room was so small there is no way to get a sitting room in there. The bed took up the entire room, along with a desk, small chair for the desk, mini-fridge, and TV. The bed was not mahogany or raised up high as promised. Both the mahogany bed and sitting area are shown in the brochure picture and promised in writing.

2. We must make reservations for some of the restaurants, which close and odd hours, and some days are just flat closed. Our reservations were lost more than once, as were other guests.

3. The construction of the resort was horrible; I constantly hit my head on unmarked low ceilings and archways.

4. The meals were a complete joke. The portions were tiny, the one night I was able to get a good meal; I ate four entrées and two desserts.

5. The food, what little there was, what horrible. It was some of the worst food I had ever had.

6. Hours of the restaurants left several hours each day that there was any food to be found; despite being assure 24hr food service was readily available by the brochure.

7. Service of the wait staff was terrible. I could never ask for more food, since they never came back to our table. Never asked how the meal was, never refilled water, never took our plates. The entire time I felt as if we were a huge inconvenience to the wait staff.

8. The brochure promised air conditioning in every room. In our room, the A/C had to run at full 24/7 to keep the room cool, because the gap under the door was large enough to slide a plate under, and there was not any glass in the windows, just shutters that didn’t keep the hot air out, or the cool air in. Aside from the room, and a single restaurant, there was not any A/C to be found.

9. Electricity was anything but stable, constant black and brown outs.

10. Room service was terrible. The mini fridge never got restocked, when we would call for things to be brought to the room, it took hours most of the time, if it showed up at all.

11. The TV kept dying. At this point we had enough and just wanted to sit there and watch TV.

12. In our room, there were huge cracks in the walls, that when brought up to management, they knew about it.

13. Screen door was broken and cut my hand.

14. Housekeeping couldn’t just clean the room, they had to mess with the fan, A/C and then sit on the bed and watch TV.

15. The bellboys treated our luggage worse than the airlines, by just rolling it down 2 flights of stairs.

16. Turndown service kept bothering us at 10pm.

17. Guest services never picked up the phone when we called. We had to walk to the front desk for answers.

18. The toaster in the Kitchen only had a single burner working. So, it took 10 minutes to get some toast.

19. Management was totally unhelpful. They listened, but never event attempted to solve the issue.

20. Restaurants wouldn’t go by their own hours. We were turned away at 1:45p even though the sign said they were open until 2. We had to get a manager to get us a table, and then there was nothing to eat because they had already cleared the buffet.

21. Winston, the resident manager, promised to call us by April 23, but did not.

This resort was a total case of mis-representation, and caused us to really regret choosing there for our honeymoon.

We did speak with management 6 times while we were there, and they promised to help, yet did nothing. We spoke to Winston, Steve, the Concierge Manager, and another, yet nothing was ever solved, just a bottle of champagne sent to our room, even though we don’t drink.

Other than Sandals, the trip was great.

Shopping in St. Johns was pointless, but I guess that is because we come from Dallas, which already has great shopping, but it was fun to drive around in the rental car and explore the island.

The people are extremely nice in Antigua. Helpful and friendly.

The water and scenery were just awesome. Loved ever second of the time spent away from the resort from hell.

Spent a little more money than I thought I would, about 700 dollars US, but we did just about everything possible.

Ok, and now I saved the best for last. Eli’s Eco Tour…wow. It was great. We loved crusing around the island in the boat, seeing all the great nature and just enjoying the awesome beauty of the island.

My wife did get a little sea sick when we stopped for snorkeling, but Eli was very helpful and sympathetic. I really appreciated that, as did my wife.

Over all, we love the island, and would go back. But we would stay far far away from Sandals, since they clearly are full of it, and are just out for money.

TPS is a problem we need to quit ignoring.

This article (removed by remote site) brought back memories of our trip to Orlando. TPS ‘Theme Park Stupidity’ is a real condition and something should be done about it. I think that TPS strikes on large groups. The bigger group you travel in the more difficult it is to do the simplest of things.

Update on life.

Well, we haven’t been posting much. Life has gotten quite busy. Things at my work have been crazy. All of the sexist remarks and verbal abuse finally stopped after speaking with HR. We moved office locations. Now we are right outside the door of the VP. Everyone is on much better behavior over here. The people in this building are much nicer and work harder. The wedding is right around the corner and I think we are both ready to have it over with. Even though we thought we wouldn’t obsess about it all, we’ve started to. Ryan is constantly checking a website about the island we’re going to, and I have been on the phone with the florist 3 or 4 times this week. I think we’re both so anxious for it to be here, that fiddling with details everyday makes it seem like it’s sooner? Just a theory. Family members are just as bad though. The mothers have purchased 4 different outfits and finally I think they’ve settled on something. I think the dads are nervous too. We’re not having any kind of rehearsal so hopefully everything will work out ok. We still have to print the menus. I didn’t realize how much stuff you had to do even if it’s a small wedding.

Things that people get away with these days.

We have been investing in some particularly expensive clothing lately, due to the fact that we are getting older, but mainly because we are both so tall, that we’re having a LOT of difficulty finding things that fit us properly. We finally were able to purchase my second item of nice clothing, a skirt. Well, I wore it once and spilled a little something on it and we took it to the cleaners. As I was setting my clothes out for work, I realized that my brand new skirt had acid burns all over it and starch! The skirt was a wool blend, which you don’t starch. I informed Ryan of this situation and of course it’s irritating. We looked over a few of his shirts that we had cleaned and found that they had ruined one of his silk shirts and his favorite shirt had what appears to be a bleach mark. We got online and researched what happens when people go back to the cleaners demanding payment for destroyed clothing. Of course, the cleaner never pays. However, if you file suit they always pay the bill then. We are now at a crossroads. Should we sue the dry cleaner over clothing that is worth quite the hefty amount or let is slide? Before getting in bed last night we agreed that we would just file with the Better Business Beauro. Today I’m sitting here thinking about this further and it’s really upsetting me. I think we should file suit. Not many people take pride in their work, and that is a sad thing, but when that effects those people who work hard and take pride in their work so that they can afford things it’s frustrating. I couldn’t imagine doing something like this at my own job. I would never do horrible or destructive work. I have a bit more respect for myself and others than that.
