Well, I finally broke down and got a laptop. It has been a while since I had one, or felt I needed one. But here I am typing this on my shiny new laptop.

While I am extremely pro-Linux, and getting more so as I deal with Vista and the stupidity that is Microsoft’s latest OS (I can’t wait for Windows 7, anything is an improvement). Enough about Vista, be looking for that in a few days, as I have to deal with it, and pretend I have the intelligence of a basic moss covered rock in order to use it. I digress…

I didn’t end up getting a Mac for a couple of reasons. First is the price, it is more expensive for less machine, which doesn’t make a whole lot of sense, but I do understand it as they are pretty sexy. But I will admit as I type here on this backlit keyboard, this Dell is pretty sexy as well.

I have had some terrible support experiences with Apples over the last few years. You have to drag your computer to an Apple store, after you make an appointment, then you have to wait to get it back, which could be weeks. I don’t have the time for that crappy service. If I could tolerate that level of incompetence, then I wouldn’t have much of a case for the purchase of a computer in the first place.

Instead, Dell gives me next business day on site, with even accidental damage covered. Apple doesn’t even begin to offer that kind of service, regardless of their completely misleading commercials.

Then there is the issue of having to run Windows in a virtual machine for a lot of the software, and having to re-purchase the Adobe suite which is like $1800, instead of being able to use the fair-use clause and use the same copy for both my desktop and laptop.

So, what would the point of paying more for way crappy service, having to double up on software, new learning curve, and then running the other OS in a virtual machine. So, here I sit, hating Vista, but loving the machine, especially for the price. Thanks Dell, and oh, Apple, take note, either improve your warranty service, or just don’t bother going after the larger business market outside of the creative arenas.

My good friend Kat over at Self Symmetry recently posted a really nice blog entry thanking me for some work I did for her on that website. So here is the post, not to toot my own horn, but hopefully get some of our friends more interested in a great yoga teacher! ~ Ryan

With the help of an amazing IT guy, Ryan Meinzer, I am proud to announce the relaunch of my website. Actually, it’s just the shopping cart area of my site. BUT — I do hope you’ll check it out (and Ryan…he’s fast, efficient, easy to understand (he is an IT guy afterall), and can totally hook you up if you need any help in this department. And, he writes a really good blog too!)

Getting back to me…haha As you can tell by the name of my company, Self Symmetry, I’m all about finding balance. I believe that when you find balance; physically, mentally, and spiritually, that you are completely and wholly healthy! I’m also all about feeling good. If we can get ourselves feeling good all the time, then our lives will be free flowing and easy. (I’m not saying that we shouldn’t experience any other emotion, but just that our dominate state should be good and positive.)

With my strong belief in finding balance and feeling good I teach yoga, make jewelry, and now this blog. If you’re in Dallas/Plano, I would love to have you come take a class of mine. See my schedule for details. If you’re not in Dallas, then just go check out a class in your ‘hood. It’s really amazing, transforming, and healing.

If you’re interested in jewelry, browse around my new shopping cart. I hand make everything and use semi precious gemstones. Gemstones have healing properties to them. They are from the earth, so they hold all kinds of positive energy…making you look good and feel good! I attach a card to each piece of jewelry describing the stones used and what they do for you energetically. Because of this, they make awesome, thoughtful gifts (Mother’s Day coming up…hint, hint). However, if you don’t wear much jewelry, check out BE Charmed! Who can’t use some extra positive energy? Side note: Guys…I don’t have any man jewelry on my site, but I can make you something. I’ve made several pieces for guys so just email me and we’ll come up with something really manly!

If you’re reading this, then you found my blog. Congrats! I would say this blog is on the spiritual side. It’s about my attempt to live life to the fullest, and all the things that I’ve learned and am still learning.

So there you have it…my shameless self promotion. I hope you leave my yoga class (or any yoga class) feeling good. I hope you feel good wearing my jewelry (I know you’ll look good!), and I hope reading my blog leaves you feeling inspired, hopeful, and optimistic!

And Ryan, you rock! I can’t thank you enough!

Balanced and feeling good - Love, Kat

thing. Which I just don’t get.

If you are a programming, why would you use views? It is adding a layer of abstraction between the logic and database in an interpreted language with a framework that is already bloated beyond all recognition. I know when I write plugins for Wordpress, I want the plugin to be quick, precise, and add the least amount of overhead possible. Views just seem to be a way to do all the opposites of those, just for the hell of it.

If you are not very technically inclined, I understand. Using views is a lot like using MS Access. You can create fairly complex queries yourself, without having to get someone that actually understands it involved. And that is the trade off. You can do it yourself, and eat the extra overhead, or pay/hire/bribe/cajole someone else into doing it for you, specialized, and thus, in theory at least, more efficiently.

These folks claimed to be programmers though, so I just don’t get it. Why are you depending on someone else’s plugin, that extends functionality that is inefficient and clumsy, can’t do everything, and still requires custom code to be written or even more plugins to be added. Where exactly does that circular line stop?

The Drupal “framework” and I use that term loosely since it is really a CMS that can just be extended, has enough problems and bloat in it, why exactly are views worth adding more? Again, assuming you know SQL and PHP on even a basic level.

It just doesnt make any sense. Query writers and views are one thing if you are working directly with the database, (e.g. phpMyAdmin or TOAD), but adding it as a layer to a “custom” application that you will be supporting when you claim to be capable of actual programming!!?? Please explain that one to me.

To be fair, I dont use Drupal much, I like WP much better. The OO approach is much more appealing than the very Perl-esque (read: old) way of doing things Drupal does with its modules. But I still don’t get what the big deal is about Views.

MultiX is a lightweight script to allow for the seamless administration of multiple Wordpress websites that can reside on different servers and databases. This plugin is a way for those of us that need to administer multiple Wordpress websites but don’t have the luxury of having all those sites on the same server or database. I have a lot of Wordpress sites I admin for people and am getting more every day. It is a complete annoyance to have to re-login to each and every one of them, so this plugin makes it to where a trust relationship is set up, and viola, now you can move back and forth at will.

Features

◊ Easy to setup and install
◊ Secure random trusted key method of authentication

BookX 0.1 is finally released. BookX creates an easy way to give your site visitors a peek at your recommended books. Using only ISBN numbers, it gets the information from Barnes and Noble (http://www.bn.com) and stores the information locally to both speed up the response time, but also to not bog down their servers with repetetive requests. BookX creates a widget for your sidebar, a list view, and detail view, all customizable from the easy to use admin interface.

Features

◊ Uses only ISBN to fill in all the important information about your books
◊ Creates a Detail Page View, List View, and a Widget all from the same plugin
◊ Each view is totally customizable from an easy to use admin interface
◊ Lots of controls over the look and feel of the generated code through the admin interface
◊ Stores most (just not the image) of the data on your server for fast results and better control

We went on a getaway earlier this week. It can be exhausting waiting for the phone to ring or an email to come in about a job opportunity. It’s important to keep your spirits up, so we’ve been trying to frequent parks and take in as much fresh air as we can. That’s a difficult thing to do living in the city, so we decided to go camping.

We were headed up to OK, but found out there was a burn ban, and what’s the fun in camping without a fire? We ended up at Martin Creek State Park, in one of their little cabins. We like to do tent camping, but Illianna is still a little too young. Illianna loved running around the cabin and exploring the woods. She was collecting things and giggling at every corner. I’ve never seen her so filthy, and let me say she is a regular mess pot, but this took the cake. I turned a blind eye to the dirt until she grabbed some cereal which had obviously fallen in the dirt/ash and came up to me with dirty hands and a black mouth trying to spit it out. Poor little thing. She’s so well trained to pick her food up and eat it after it’s fallen on the floor.

It was nice to see trees older than a couple of years, and we almost had the park to ourselves, but there was a huge power plant humming in the distance and a stupid train announcing its presence every hour or so. We were able to see some wildlife, roast marshmellows, hike around, and see a few more stars than we can see from our backyard, but we won’t be returning to that park. We managed to take a pretty decent photo of ourselves.
